Though we first see Charice’s character in the first musical number, we aren’t introduced to her until a bathroom number with self-proclaimed star, Rachel Berry (Lea Michele). The Telephone duet between the two powerful vocalists provides a glimpse of how critical Sunshine’s amazing voice will affect the new season of Glee.
Filipinos were already familiar with the Internet sensation, but as MTV’s Aly Semigran writes, “Now the world knows… Singing sensation Charice is a force to be reckoned with.” Without giving much of the season premiere’s plot away, Sunshine does win the heart of the New Directions (the Glee club) and many viewers with her rendition of Listen. A fellow Fil-Am Maureen on Facebook states, “she sang Listen like nobody’s business,” and many of my Fil-Am family and friends have been circulating the video of the said song on Facebook like there’s no tomorrow.
Of course, Filipinos at home are also just as impressed. According to ABS-CBN, many were glued to the their television for this debut, and the duet and solo songs both appeared on iTunes top 20. Rowena Willingham was quoted to say that the debut “symbolizes every American dream of any and every single American immigrant. She’s doing the best for our country and representing our dreams.”
