Filipino Music Knows No Boundaries

This video has been making its rounds on YouTube and Facebook. This YouTube video shows the Northwest Missouri State University Madraliers singing Paru-Parong Bukid at the Liberty United Methodist Church in Kansas City, MO. What is Paru-Parong Bukid? Some say this Filipino folk song tells the story of a beautiful butterfly flying down the road. Others say it actually tells the story of a beautiful woman looking very fancy as she shows off for her neighbors. This performance puts a smile on face as it shows that more people are becoming aware of the Filipino culture and that our music is universal. Seeing the Madraliers singing this song in left me with the impression that their performance was very Filipino at heart.

Some might say that this performance is due to University of Santo Tomas Singers winning the Choir of the World 2010. The Madraliers are not the only American choir to perform this Filipino folk song. ZCHS Chamber Choir from Zionsville Community High School in Zionsville, IN also has their rendition of Paru-Parong Bukid. What the Filipino community should take from this is that people are willing to learn about our culture, but most importantly Filipinos need to start first with their children so they never forget where they come from.
