As many of you are probably rushing to meet the deadline for tax season in April (I have yet to fill out my forms), don’t forget to also submit your census forms. With Filipino appearing in the race category in the 2010 national census many Fil-Am organizations like FANHS are reminding Americans that ALL Filipinos should be counted. This means that anyone who is at least 1/6th Filipino should check the newly added “Filipino” race category. Now, why should marking the “Filipino” race category in the 2010 US Census even matter? According to the US Census Bureau, “Race data are used to assess fairness of employment practices, to monitor racial disparities in characteristics such as health and education, and to plan and obtain funds for public services.” As Fil-Am reporter, Cher Calvin explains in the PSA posted above, the future of the Filipino-American community is in YOUR hands and it only takes 10 minutes to fill out 10 easy questions. So, please take the the time to mark the newly “Filipino” box in the 2010 US Census.
