A Disgrace to the Filipino Race: Andal Ampatuan, Jr.

Here at Fil-Am Ako we like to feature Filipinos who do their best to represent our people but there are just some Pinoys who mess it up for the rest of us.  The title to this post is a tribute to one of my favorite blogs that I’ve followed since I was in college which is Disgrasian created by two very intelligent and sexy Asian American women.

Who is Andal Ampatuan, Jr. and why is he a disgrace?

A member of the Ampatuan political family in Maguindanao province, on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines and is governor of the province and patriarch of the family.  Ampatuan came to international attention in November 2009 as a result of the Maguindanao massacre.  He was set on running for governor of the province against Esmael Mangudadatu in the 2010 elections. However, Mangudadatu’s female relatives and a group of journalists were ambushed and killed in the massacre.  Ampatuan Jr. became the prime suspect.  A member of the ruling Lakas-Kampi-CMD party, he and his father and brother were expelled by party chairman Gilberto Teodoro due to the massacre.  He surrendered to Filipino authorities and was charged with murder.  What makes this guy a complete disgrace to Filipinos is that he has denied any involvement in the massacre even though there were several witnesses that have gone on record stating that they saw him at the scene of the crime.

This video is mostly in English but I’m too lazy to translate the dialogue in Tagalog to you guys (the conversation shows how loved ones of the victims want justice and how they plan to have their day in court). What the video focuses on is that Ampatuan, will face the court again on Jan. 13, when the remaining 15 counts of murder will be read. Only 41 counts were read to Ampatuan Jr. during his arraignment last Jan. 5.

Note: I hope to not make this a regular segment on Fil-Am Ako as I want to feature positive figures who make us proud of our Filipino heritage.
