These are the underlying goals of the 2009 ALIW AWARDS Best Musical Play “AKO SI NINOY (There’s a Ninoy in all of Us)”. After receiving standing ovations in all its play dates, the highly acclaimed three-act Filipino Musicale deserves another standing ovation, this time for having found a place as one of the best in Philippine artistry through the prestigious Aliw Awards.
With artistic quality often compared equal, if not better than a lot of broadway musicals, “AKO SI NINOY” was also given four other nominations. BEST DIRECTOR, BEST ACTOR, BEST ACTRESS, and BEST CHILD ACTOR in the recently concluded Aliw Awards, and bringing home the Best Child Actor and Best Director Awards, apart from the Best Musical Play Award.
Vincent M. Tañada, a lawyer and scion of the illustrious Tañada clan wrote the script after being inspired by the launching of the “I Am Ninoy Movement”. Tañada being a Palanca and Aliw awardee sought out to write what he called as a “big dream”. To write a musicale that can entertain, yet educate, inspire, and most of all motivate people to become better people based on the life story of our modern day national hero who sacrificed his life for the love of country.
While rehearsing the musical, Tañada contacted the Benigno S. Aquino Foundation (BSAF) to “look at the play” for comments and suggestions. It was then that the nephew of Aquino, Rapa Lopa, the executive director of the BSAF showed a keen interest.
Lopa says that he was very much taken with the play. He further said that they captured the “I am Ninoy” spirit which the BSAF launched last year.
The play is made up of theatre actors from the Philippine Stagers Foundation from Manila. A theatre company founded by Tañada himself some 8 years ago. Will surely keep audiences alert throughout the play. From its energetic music, snappy choreography, hilarious punchlines and lyrics, “Ako Si Ninoy” is one musicale play people will remember for quite a long time.
After excellent reviews in Manila, “AKO SI NINOY” debuts at the Queen City of the South, on November 27, 2009 for a one-night only presentation at the Grand Ballroom of the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel. Ticket buyers can call the Waterfront Hotel at 232-6888 or Red Tag at 238-8288.
An all original cast of around 60 stage actors from Manila will not only make Cebuanos laugh and cry and be entertained, but will also educate, and inspire them to love our country even more, and consequently motivate its audience to be more involved in the exercise of our social responsibilities for the betterment of our beloved nation.
“AKO SI NINOY (There’s a Ninoy in all of Us)” is also endorsed by the National Commission for Culture & the Arts, and the Department of Education that’s why many Schools and Universities in Metro Manila and its nearby provinces have already seen the musicale play.
