With the increase in Filipinos taking the opportunity to exit the Philippines, those left behind have become insensitive to Filipino Diaspora. I am not one to criticize these people because my family is among the many that left Philippines in pursuit of a better life outside the country. I just wanted to bring this news to everyone’s attention because it is important that we all think about this and the effects it will have on the Philippines. According to the Commission on Filipinos Overseas, “more than eight million Filipinos are scattered in all parts of the world with 4.7 million migrant workers, while 900,000 have entered countries without proper documents.”
Further study has shown that migration has already distorted some Filipino values and it has been embedded in the Filipino psyche to aspire for a job abroad. The evidence of the growing popularity of nursing, caregiver, and computer engineering courses in the Philippines emphasizes the need for overseas employment. What concerns me about these findings is what is going to happen to the future of our motherland when the best and brightest of the country decide to leave? How should all of us abroad feel about this or should we feel any guilt like I have that this is happening?
